Section 3 Emily Altmyer
Chapter 10- Chris' brother, Sam, originally didn't think the article he read was about Chris. When he recieves a better description about the dead hitchhiker he ufortunately realizes it is Chris. Sam is called on to identify Chris through the pictures. Sam and his wife drove to Maryland to tell his parents about their upsetting discovery.
Chapter 11- Chris' family loved the outdoors. They often took long trips because getting away and experiencing adventure ran in the family. Chris' grandfather, Loren Johnson was a trucker and was a lover of nature. He was also a hunter, though when he had to kill an animal he cried. Chris and Loren were very close.
Chapter 12- When Chris graduates high school he appears very greatful and happy with his parents. He gives his dad an expensive telescope and his dad says he is very proud of Chris. Chris takes his first trip that summer and comes back a couple months later. He had been lost in the Mojave Desert and was almost fully dehydrated. Chris' mom hates not knowing where her son is at all times. She stops to take second glances at each hitchhiker she sees in hopes that it is Chris. She also leaves a note on the door and experiences terrible nightmares that Chris is calling for her.
Chapter 13- The author visits Carine McCandless in Virgina Beach. She shows him pictures and says how much she loves her dog, Buck. She is as smart as Chris and they were best friends growing up. She works with her husband, Chris Fish, constantly and loves it. She cries over Chris' death almost everyday. When she found out she and her brother, Sam, flew to Fairbanks to retrieve Chris' body.
Chapter 14- Krakauer describes climbing Devil's Thumb while reading the works of John Edwards. He quits his job on the spot and leaves for Alaska, feeling free. He describes emotional and physical highs and lows. After several days of climbing Krakauer reaches rock and he is forced to turn around and go down the mountain.
